During the 1920s, Dexter P. Cooper developed a plan to build an enormous hydro-electric station which would utilize the tidal power of the Bay of Fundy. With Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s support, he worked to realize this project until it was halted by the stock market crash of 1929, along with concerns that the dam would hurt tourism and fishing. Despite the project’s abandonment, many blueprints and maps of the Quoddy Dam still survive. This was a pioneering concept and an early attempt to move the world towards sustainable renewable energy.
